Phototype
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux
Phototype is an adventure/action game that I developed to my Master's Degree research in Information and Communication Technology (UFSC, Brazil). The game has been released and evaluated in June of 2018, after about one year of development.
The game plot is about an alien invasion in the near future. The aliens subjugate the Earth and control the main energy generation systems. The player assumes the control of an engineer and has the responsibility of restoring the operation of Solar Power Plants and repel the invaders.
In the game, the player needs to repair, align and clean photovoltaic panels through three main levels, generating sufficient energy to the power plants. A quiz tests the student's knowledge and restores the character's life.
This is was my first full game developed and I learned a lot about game design and development, using Unity Engine, Blender, and other tools. After this project, I was motivated to engage in game making and made a lot of new projects to study.
About the research
The game used the Game Mechanics - Learning Mechanics framework to achieve serious games requisites and relate the learning concepts with game mechanics. My research analyzed the learning outcomes of the photovoltaic systems subject in Energy Engineering graduation course.
The playtest resulted in quantitative data about the user experience and availability of a serious game in Energy Engineering context. I presented my work in December of 2018.
The project has been oriented by Dr. Roderval Marcelino (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina) and received a lot of support from Dr. Michael Callagham (University of Ulster).
